"It was a war, you see. A secret war, but a war nonetheless."
Earth has a problem. Several dark sorcerers have decided that the world would be a better place if the terrible, vengeful gods were released from their prison. (It wouldn't.)
All the good sorcerers want to stop this. They've amassed their armies, and they've been fighting hard for five years. Only one problem: their best general has just been murdered. And now the bad guys are winning.
1763
"Once I was dead, they stuck my body up on a pike and burned it for all to see."
The Morrigan was generous. The army of good has their General back. He's undead, of course - he's nothing but bones - but that won't stop him from getting his revenge. The thing that will: The man who killed him (one Nefarian Serpine) has "repented" and is now a protected citizen.
1787
"I put myself back together, which was rather painful, then climbed out of the river and rejoined the fight, and in the end, we won."
Finally, the war is over. Mevolent is gone... and his Three Generals? No one knows. One is "reformed," one in prison, and the third... where? The Skeleton General has vanished, and a patina of calm has spread over the recently war-stricken world.
2007
"You're a perfectly nice young lady. It wouldn't do for you to get too involved in this."
Skulduggery Pleasant is the Skeleton Detective now, living and working in the greater UK area. His old friend Gordon Edgley has just died, and it is up to Skulduggery and Gordon's niece Stephanie to find out how... and why.
